Agglutinins in Relation to Blood Transfusion

چکیده

The reason for the compatibility or otherwise between two bloods was discovered by Landsteiner in I900. He found by a series of cross-testings with red corpuscles and blood sera from different individuals that all bloods could be divided into four chief groups according to the presence or absence from the corpuscles of one or other or both of two agglutinogens A and B. Two corresponding agglutinins o and , (or anti-A and anti-B) may also be present in the serum and hae-nagglutination, and later haemolysis occurs wherever homologous agglutinin and agglutinogen come into contact with one another. Jansky in I907 in Europe and Moss in I909 in America classifieA the four blood groups by numbers, and their classifications are still occasionally met with. The various classifications and the usual agglutinin and agglutinogen content of the blood groups are given in Table I.

Studies on Leukocyte Antibodies, with Special Reference to the Production of Antibodies Subsequent to Blood Transfusion.

The importance of blood transfusion in stimulating the production of most leuko-agglutinins is established beyond all doubt. Among 60 leuko-agglutinating sera studied by Dausset, 90 per cent were from patients who had received multiple (average of 22) transfusions. Brittingham, Andre et al. and Payne also noted a high degree of correlation. Other than leuko-agglutinins, various types of homolog...

Problems of Cold Agglutinins in Cardiac Surgery: How to Manage Cardiopulmonary Bypass and Myocardial Protection

Cold agglutinins are of unique relevance in cardiac surgerybecause of the use of hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Cold autoimmune diseases are defined by the presence of abnormal circulating proteins (usually IgM or IgA antibodies) that agglutinate in response to a decrease in body temperature. These disorders include cryoglobulinemia and cold hemagglutinin disease.Immunoglobulin M aut...

Fatal cold agglutinin-induced haemolytic anaemia: a case report

INTRODUCTION Cold agglutinin disease usually develops as a result of the production of a specific immunoglobulin M auto-antibody directed against the I/i and H antigens, precursors of the ABH and Lewis blood group substances, on red blood cells. Autoimmune and lymphoproliferative disorders, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and other infections can be associated with the production of cold agglutinins. In ...

Report of cold agglutinins in a patient with acute ischemic stroke

BACKGROUND Studies on the role of cold agglutinins in the pathogenesis of acute ischemic stroke are scarce. We present a case of an elderly man with acute cerebral infarction probably due to cold agglutinin disease. CASE PRESENTATION On a cold morning, a 71-year-old male of Han nationality with a complaint of sudden onset left-sided weakness and difficulty in speaking was brought to the emerg...
